Responsibilities
This position provides deep support for the analysis, design, development, and delivery of ship to shore communications and data transport to achieve and sustain world class Shipboard Communications and services for the Carnival Corporation fleet. This position will be a part of the team who will be responsible for the development of ship to shore communication transport services for the fleet. This will include Satellite services, WiMax, WiFi, LTE or others as may be defined to achieve optimal results.
The Principal Operation Engineer is responsible for the design, validation and integration of effective and reliable ship-to-shore satellite and wireless communication systems and for the collection and summarization of network statistics for the assigned Carnival Corporation brands and vessels.
The incumbent will support Satellite Communication Analysts on the collection of hard data and act as technical advisor for the evaluation of enhancing alternatives that will allow Carnival Corporation´s brands to enjoy an optimal level of service across the global satellite, telecommunications, and wireless WAN network. You will also be expected to be available to support fellow IT team members on the resolution of network performance issues that require in-depth analysis of traffic statistics and equipment configuration parameters.
You are expected to be well grounded in the technical aspects of satellite and telecommunications networks including an understanding of satellite RF and IP networks and to remain at the forefront of industry´s technical trends.
Essential Functions:
- Engineer responsible for Shipboard telecommunications and satellite systems– Be the resident expert in baseband and terminal technologies. Implement, configure, troubleshoot, and optimize satellite and terrestrial baseband networks.
- Continuous Improvement of satellite and telecommunications systems - Analyze network performance data and develop plans to address any service impacting trends; develop and provide reporting on a regular basis to brand and corporate management.
- Operations monitoring, availability & performance (Guest/Crew experience = End2End) – Ensure that performance and availability metrics are met or exceeded to allow for Global Infrastructure Services to deliver world class services to Guests and Crew; in conjunction with key stakeholders, monitor, and proactively implement enhancements that will enable our brands to provide leading services to guest and crew. Lead the identification of needed terrestrial circuits for acquisition. Optimization and monitoring of existing and future circuits.
- Network Optimization – of networks, routers, firewalls, WAN optimization.
- Incident management – this includes problem escalation for processes with critical event communication, RCA; establish operation monitoring processes and incident management including alerting, triage, escalation, and communication for all shipboard communication; develop Testing and QA protocols for deployment and troubleshooting of satellite services incidents and development of documentation including BOM, design documentation and user manuals.
- Bandwidth pooling, process coordination and brand collaboration - design, implement and maintain a satellite bandwidth pooling methodology to optimize Fleet bandwidth; create reports which capture effectiveness of bandwidth pooling.
- Alternate bandwidth sourcing (ex. ship-shore WiFi) – Coordinate and work with project management team as needed to create and deploy multi-mode, least cost routing (MMLCR) design using existing or emerging technologies; provide input on the design and build-out of new terrestrial and satellite networks supporting Internet and enterprise connectivity and value-added services.
- Vendor Solutions Delivery - work with vendors to define requirements and test new products and updates; Define, implement, and manage network architectural changes that will maximize the ability of GIS to best service its customers.
- Documentation and specifications – define and/or develop infrastructure design and procedures for utilization of global VSAT & Terrestrial networks; work as necessary assisting GIS Operations and service partners to validate, isolate, and resolve issues during pilot and production phases; work with Product Management teams at operating companies to define product specifications as they relate to ship to shore communications; work with Global IT Infrastructure on system design, including hardware and software configuration, estimate of system costs, assessment to ascertain suitability of off-the-shelf or internal build of system components.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
- Technical and managerial certifications are desirable.
- 10+ Years of Experience implementing complex satellite, telecommunications, and/or VSAT infrastructure.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of both theoretical and practical aspects of satellite communications
- Detailed knowledge of iDirect, Hughes, and/or Viasat Satellite Baseband Infrastructure
- Satellite antennas (C-Band and KU), satellite bandwidth pooling, QoS
- Excellent presentation and communication skills required.
- Experience in implementing satellite communications systems is required.
- Hands on experience with telecommunications networks (Internet protocols, routing, queuing, effects of delay and packet loss, etc.) is required. Strong Knowledge in RF communications with the ability to create link budgets to ensure optimal system performance.
- Hands on experience in evaluating satellite baseband hardware, software, and terminals running both voice and data applications.
- Experience with internet optimization products/appliances such as caching, pre-fetch, compression, and others.
- Hands on experience in configuration, test, and optimization of satellite terminals in maritime/mobility applications
- Must have excellent system level troubleshooting and problem resolution skills.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with network equipment, testing, troubleshooting, specification of hardware and software.
- Knowledge of TCP/IP Networking protocols and standards, routing, multicast, testing of IP based Layer 2 and Layer 3 devices, applications and QoS.
- Working knowledge of Satellite RF sub-systems (Block Up Converters, LNBs, antennas) is helpful.
- Ability to capture and analyze IP packets using tools like Ethereal or Tcpdump.
- Experienced in supporting installations, upgrades, and system integration efforts.
- Must be competent with interpreting and using electrical and mechanical engineering drawings, cables lists and similar documents.
- Must be proficient with electrical and communications wiring, operation and setup of personal computers.
- Experience using google earth (kml format) and or any other relevant mapping software to create coverage maps
- Proven experience in implementing complex satellite and terrestrial communication services.
- Experience in Operational Support and/or Service Delivery
- Advanced technical expertise in computer and network services for both local and wide area networks
- Ability to collaborate well across geographically diverse teams.

Physical Demands:Work is primarily sedentary where sitting is required most of the time; walking and standing are required occasionally. Visual acuity is required to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data, viewing a computer terminal, reading documents, reports, and emails.

Work Conditions:Position will be located at Carnival Corporation’s headquarters in Miami, Florida. Work beyond normal business hours may be required occasionally to support business needs or projects.
This position is classified as “in-office.” As an in-office role, it requires employees to work from a designated Carnival office in South Florida Tuesday through Thursday each week. Employees may work from their homes on Mondays and Fridays. Candidates must be located in (or willing to relocate to) the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area.
