This role reports to the Manager, Quality & Patient Safety and will support the program management of clinical quality and risk management activities which include identifying, examining, and responding to quality/risk-related issues, requests for legal discovery, and complaints; coordinating quality and risk-related investigations to promote safe patient care and, staff safety. Supporting the department on complaints/concerns identified through Hotline reports, Guest Relations and/or Legal Dept. that have clinical quality and risk management implications; monitoring organizational event reporting with primary focus on incidents involving harm or potential liability and identify opportunities for improvement; analyzing risk management information; proposing, recommending and implementing solutions and resolutions to quality and risk-related issues and events; following up on the implementation and impact of proposed solutions and resolutions. Carries out data management responsibilities for clinical data that are needed to fulfill the organizational quality improvement plan.

The Specialist, Health Quality assists in global quality and risk management program development; complies with quality and risk management standards for purposes of program compliance with the objective of promoting and enhancing patient and employee safety, quality care, and minimizing losses to protect the assets of the organization. 

This role will interface with brand stakeholders, medical teams onboard, shoreside health services and public health leaders as well as external vendors that manage our healthcare systems. This role supports the four North American brands with approximately 65+ ships carrying over 10 million guests annually and employing over 100,000 ship and shore team members. 

Essential Functions:

  • Quality Audits & Data Management:
    • Reviews medical records, automated reports, and abstracts clinical documentation to support the quality improvements and regulatory reporting requirements.
    • Works with the clinical teams to review cases identified through audit activities and escalate as necessary to appropriate stakeholders within Health Services.
    • Collate, maintain, analyze, and report on multiple quality and risk data sources. 
    • Maintains accuracy, integrity, and reliability of the data to support the data base. 
    • Assumes responsibility of accurate data collection for specific reports and ensuring data distribution to the appropriate areas.
    • Responsible for abstracting clinical data requested of management from any electronic data collection system with the interpretation and presentation of conclusions via charts, graphs, and dashboards.
    • Develop monitoring and tracer tools to monitor patient safety and adherence to organizational policies and procedures.
    • Maintains Company Specific Policy Tracking document and coordinates policy revisions through SME’s as directed
  • Risk Management Activities:
    • Supports the management of patient safety events. Including, investigation and root cause analysis, develops corrective and preventative plans, and monitors risk plans. 
    • Investigates medical complaints and claims: assists with root cause analysis and assesses need for focused review by Subject Matter Experts. 
    • Act as liaison with legal department regarding guest and crew claims.
    • Provide responses to the guest/crew departments within the defined time limits. 
    • Works with SME’s to develop and monitor corrective actions.
  • Training:

  • Develops and delivers training materials to shipboard and shoreside staff as part of the continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Under direction of the Manager and in collaboration with corporate teams, implements strategies focused on training, quality assurance (QA), and process improvement to fleet medical teams based on quality outcomes findings and trends. 
  • Acts as a resource and educator for multidisciplinary team members.
  • Program Governance & Policy:
    • Collaborate with the Health Policy team to review and update medical policies and procedures related to quality and risk management.
    • Functions as support to Health Services committees by performing the following activities: 1. Collects appropriate quality performance data and clinical information. 2. Analyzes and evaluates data and clinical information to identify quality issues and trends.
    • The Specialist may be asked to perform other function-related activities in addition to the above-mentioned responsibilities as reasonably required by business needs.

Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in nursing. RN, BSN preferred. 
  • CPHQ or other healthcare related quality and risk designations preferred.
  • 2 years of clinical experience required. +2 years of healthcare quality, risk management, and legal/medical claims experience preferred. 
  • Prior Experience with Electronic Health Record systems. Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and PowerPlatforms.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in clinical skills and health quality to identify patient safety concerns. The ability to manage time appropriately and use critical thinking skills to evaluate information and evidence-based decisions. The ability to be able to communicate clearly and effectively with healthcare teams.

Physical Demands: Must be able to remain in a stationary position at a desk and/or computer for extended periods of time. Requires regular movement throughout CCL facilities.

Travel: Less than 25% with shipboard travel likely

Work Conditions: Work primarily in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential. May be requested to work a different shift.

This position is classified as "in-office." As an in-office role, it requires employees to work from a designated Carnival office in South Florida from Tuesday through Thursday.  Employees may work from home on Mondays and Fridays. Some positions may require additional in-office time each week and final schedule is determined by your leader.  Candidates must be located in (or willing to relocate to) the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area.

    • Sick Time – All full-time employees receive 80 hours of sick time each year.  Part-time with benefits employees receive time off based on the number of hours they work, with a minimum of 60 hours each year.
