Responsibilities
Job Description
The Backstage & Automation Trainer conducts Entertainment Technical training programs based on specific and comprehensive backstage & Automation discipline curriculum, under limited supervision. Determines training objectives in coordination with management. Writes/reviews training programs including tiered course curriculums, handouts, and tests, and designs laboratory style practical exercises. Lectures on safety, project planning, installation, preventative maintenance, and repairs of Automation Systems, theatrical sets, props, Flying apparatuses, stage flooring etc. In addition, the Backstage Trainer administers written and practical examinations and authors performance reports to evaluate and document the trainee's progress and performance during their tour in Carnival Studios.
Essential Functions:
- Delivers group and individual instruction and instructor led trainings covering a range of policy/procedure, technical and operational curriculum in the specific field/discipline
- Evaluate effectiveness of training and recommends any refining of training curriculum while researching and recommending development of training aids including training handbooks, demonstration models and multimedia visual aids
- Maintain administrative training records for each trainee for the purpose development tracking
- Perform inventory, maintenance to sets, props and other facility needs related to the operation
- Coordinate with the Production Team for Setups on new shows and vessels. So this knowledge can be introduced to the existing curriculum
- Work alongside Operations/Production divisions to incorporate improvements for general production including contributing to the technical inner workings of new productions via subject matter expert knowledge and best practices of the specific discipline
- Deliver group style HR shipboard training sessions to shipboard team members at Carnival Studios
- Be aware of the technical support given to vessels via Issuetrak (online issue ticketing system) and telephone support as assigned by the Manager of Stage & Automation, discipline specific
- Participate in the recruitment of Entertainment Technicians alongside the Entertainment Casting & Booking Department as appropriate
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Stage Management, Theatre, Theatre w/Design & Production
- BA & BFA, Stage Management or Theatre preferred
- 5+ years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified
- Strong computer skills (P/C Windows & Mac), knowledge of industry standard software/hardware, proficient in Microsoft Office 365 suite
- Experience instructing in the field of stage management and production on cruise ships preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong teaching and facilitation skills, ability to assess training needs and objectives, comprehensive knowledge of curriculum within training plans, strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a diverse setting.
- Basic knowledge of rigging, Automation systems used in the entertainment industry.
- Navigator & Visual Stage preferred.
Physical Demands: Must be able to remain in a stationary position at a desk and/or computer for extended periods of time. Requires regular movement throughout CCL facilities. May need to stand for long periods of time.
Travel: None
Work Conditions: Work primarily in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential. Work may require employee to work inside and outside with exposure to changing climate and/or operate machinery. May be requested to work a different shift.
Work Location: This position is classified as "in-office." As an in-office role, it requires employees to work from a designated Carnival office in South Florida from Tuesday through Thursday. Employees may work from home on Mondays and Fridays. Some positions may require additional in-office time each week and final schedule is determined by your leader. Candidates must be located in (or willing to relocate to) the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area.
