We are seeking an Epidemiologist to report to the Manager, Health Informatics and support a multi-disciplinary global medical and public health team to conduct epidemiologic surveillance and response activities for Carnival Corporation’s combined fleets of nine Brands of over 90 ships that carry 12 million travelers per year and employ 100,000 crew members. The Epidemiologist provides guidance and recommendations on planning, design, implementation, administration, management, and evaluation of health programs via epidemiological surveillance systems. The role generates assessments, reports and analysis on the efficacy of health programs and the burden of illness that guides decision making.
The Epidemiologist will report illnesses of concern to internal stakeholders and assist with the planning and interventions to prevent and control the spread of communicable illnesses. They will coordinate the collection of data through clinical record reviews, observations, interviews, surveys and distribute analytical reports of disease activity to stakeholders. They will assist develop public health programs that control communicable diseases by reviewing policies and procedures, tracking disease activity, analyzing data, and recommending ways to strengthen programs to improve public health outcomes. They will assist shipboard health staff with case investigations and contact tracing. They will liaise as required, with local, regional and national health authorities. They will participate in health promotion activities such as vaccination campaigns including creation and dissemination of educational material and patient information to maximize vaccination uptake. They will monitor public health requirements for travelers, including COVID-19 and other illnesses such as Yellow Fever, and communicate requirements and recommendations to stakeholders.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES
- Support the investigation and response to cases, clusters and outbreaks of infectious illnesses among cruise ship travelers
- Communicate, coordinate and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to provide factual assessments and recommended responses to public health events
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders regarding epidemiological analysis and prevention and control of communicable disease outbreaks
- Establish strong relationships with regulatory health authorities and determine timely communication channels to facilitate coordinated reporting and response efforts
- Maintains mutually beneficial levels of information exchange, business model appreciation, and professional cooperation with national and international public health agencies
- Identifies potential international public health risks and collaborates to implement effective mitigation strategies in a timely manner
- Identifies reports of infectious illnesses and public health threats that may impact cruise ship travelers and communicate these to internal health teams
- Assist with the monitoring, preventing, and controlling of infectious diseases, including public health threats, through review of scientific and health information
- Contributes subject matter expertise with cruise industry partners to establish best practices
HEALTH ANALYTICS & INFORMATICS
- Collect, analyze and distribute actionable health data in a clear and concise manner to stakeholders
- Use health analytics to determine disease associations and recommend appropriate mitigation measures
- Identify business risks of a public health nature and communicate these risks to management and internal stakeholders
- Assists to establish the objectives and priorities for epidemiologic surveillance systems and evaluation of infection prevention and control policies and procedures
- Assists in the development of the data warehouse, ensuring practical application for public health epidemiology
- Tasks include designing aggregated summary tables and deidentified, record level datasets for sharing with partners; co-designing metric and data quality reports for dissemination; and co-designing the automation of these processes with the Health Operations Center, Health IT, and public health leads
- Collaborate with , Health Informatics team, to ensure relevant public health data is captured accurately and timely
- Assists the Manager, Health Informatics in determining the scope, design and nature of epidemiologic and infection prevention and control proposals, projects, and studies to be carried out in the epidemiology program
- Collaborates with health IT team to enhance SeaCare® electronic health record system functionality to capture and automate disease reporting
PUBLIC HEALTH PROGRAMS
- Evaluate, develop, and improve both public health surveillance and epidemiologic investigation programs
- Collaborate with health teams to develop public health policies and procedures that strengthen public health programs to mitigate illness
- Assist in the development of public health policies and procedures by identifying gaps in policies and operations and providing practicable recommendations
- Oversee coordination of health campaigns to maximize uptake of vaccinations to diseases including COVID-19, influenza, MMR, and yellow fever
- Assist in the development of health alerts and advisories as appropriate
- Communicate relevant medical and public health policy and procedures to the Fleet and obtain feedback on implementation and effectiveness
- Less than 25% with shipboard travel likely
QUALIFICATIONS
- MPH, MS or equivalent or higher science degree
- Epidemiology training and education focus
- 5 years as a practicing epidemiologist, preferably in infectious diseases
- Experience in cruise ship public health strongly preferred
- Principles and procedures of epidemiology, including design, evaluation of research, epidemiology of common communicable and chronic diseases and methods of disease control
- Current developments in epidemiology and infection prevention and control
- Expertise in interpretation of qualitative and quantitative data from multiple sources of information
- Ability to interpret and execute complex public health information
- Organizational skills demonstrating high attention to detail
- Communication skills demonstrating clear, rapid and accurate dissemination of information
- Analytic skills using large databases including statistical software
- Strong organizational and conflict resolution skills

The range for this role’s base salary is $80,000 - $110,000. Offers to selected candidates will be made on a fair and equitable basis, taking into account specific job-related skills and experience.
